So the latest incarnation of the Leaving Plan has involved my dad driving his truck to pull our enclosed trailer which we're worried is too heavy for the minivan to handle. Dad may have developed a blood clot in his leg, however, which would throw a wrench in him driving for a few days straight. He's getting an ultrasound at the moment. For now, we'll be reorganizing what we've packed to separate what we'll need in the first month or so in case he can't come with us right away, and wait for results about Dad. Update: Dad came back from the hospital with good news - doesn't appear to be a clot, so he was given the OK to go. We've decided to leave Monday morning (my dad will head out Tuesday morning), spend two nights in Kansas City with some of Lance's family, and then we'll caravan together to the land on Wednesday. We hope.

L-shaped quad bunkbed for the boys (left), kitchen/"living" area, our bed (right) Since housebuilding this summer didn't get much further than excavating the foundation, we've decided to build what will later become the 200 sq. ft. greenhouse as soon as we arrive (a project that should only take about ten days - two weeks) and live in that while we work on the house. Now to figure out where we will sleep while we build the greenhouse... There are several rainy days in the forecast for the second half of the month, so I'm really hoping that the answer to that question is not "in a tent." We're down to our last 10 days in the Springs. I have been spending most of my time recently sorting, selling, giving, and throwing away the seemingly endless amount of "stuff" we've accumulated in our thirty-odd years of life. The rest of the hours have been devoted to giving the kids their final smörgåsbord of Coloradoness. And whenever I can squeeze it in, I am reading reading reading.
The Persian-Tajik poet Ibn Yamin (1286-1368) spoke of four types of men: One who knows and knows that he knows… His horse of wisdom will reach the skies. One who knows, but doesn’t know that he knows… He is fast asleep, so you should wake him up! One who doesn’t know, but knows that he doesn’t know… His limping mule will eventually get him home. One who doesn’t know and doesn’t know that he doesn’t know… He will be eternally lost in his hopeless oblivion! Of course we are all at any given moment some combination of each of the four men. I am currently overwhelmed by the third category. The more I read, the more I am aware of how much more there is to know. But it won't be until we really sink our teeth into this venture that the true enormity of the last category will come to light. |
